This show isn't perfect. As someone who tends to be severely politically minded I couldn't help but cringe at the frequenting microaggressions toward minorities, especially toward transgender individuals and people of color. There is also a clear lack of diversity within the main cast of this show, (I can only remember off of the top of my head Miranda and Samantha each dating one person of color and the other girls dating none). Despite all of this, this show still managed to swiftly move it's way to be one of my favorite shows and I'll tell you why!
While I may have not been alive when this show was originally airing, (embarrassing i know), I can still tell the lasting impact this show has had on the television industry. I can't even count the amount of shows that I know realized have referenced SATC in some capacity. Not only this, but it has also greatly impacted the way society views women. It was very rare to see a cast of this many women at this time, let alone multi-dimensional women. Even though they just barely passed the Bechdel test, they were characters with duality. They were a great showcase of how realistic women are able to be sexual beings without jeopardizing their intelligence and power in society. Samantha Jones, who was seen nude and partaking in sexual activity more than the other girls, was also arguably the most powerful in terms of her career. She is also most often the fan favorite- not only do most people find her the funniest but she is also the character most people want to be able to associate themselves with. Why is that? Because she is what all women want to be- completely and utterly herself without fear of repercussions she may face from those around her.
It couldn't be an honest review if I didn't share my MOST favorite part about this show, which is the aesthetic. This show pushes me closer and closer to moving to New York. I also am completely in love with the stylistic choices of this show. I miss this era of television, when style was intricate and severely intentional. I have a concept I am going to be writing of a sequel to a 2000s movie, and have been inspired by this show to not modernize my interpretation. Instead, I will be honoring it's original fashion and music since it is what people love about it so much, just like I do with Sex and the City.
Now, if you're going to ask me if I'm going to watch the reboot- Geez! Will you relax? I just finished this one! Gimme some time, will ya?
I like how you point out its flaws at the beginning, but even still this show remains timeless and still has me laughing to this day and I watched it when it aired.
“a great showcase of how realistic women are able to be sexual beings without jeopardizing their intelligence and power in society“ WOW! this is so so good.
